KUCHING, Thursday – Bookaroo will be at the Rainforest World Music Festival this year, with interactive sessions for children aged seven to 12 over the course of the three-day festival.

The sessions will include storytelling and reading as well as arts and crafts sessions, all thematically centred on cultural and traditional music.

The Pustaka Bookaroo at the Festival was created to increase awareness and appreciation for the traditional indigenous music and instruments among the younger generation, using mind-broadening activities that let the children use their creativity and skills to craft functioning instruments from household materials.

The Pustaka Bookaroo will continue the Doodle Wall, where the children and other festival goers have the opportunity to make their mark on the large mural of a ‘Tree of Life’, indicating their personal love or relationship with music through drawings.

Pustaka, short for the Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, has always taken great steps towards encouraging literacy and love for books and learning among the younger generation in Sarawak and holding ‘Bookaroo’ programmes strengthens those steps into even greater strides.

The Bookaroo projects began in 2008 in India and are now held in various cities including Kuching, with the main goal of bringing children, books and writers together in book-related activities to foster a joy of reading in children.

In addition to the 20th anniversary for the RWMF, the Pustaka Bookaroo comes with its own achievements as they return to Kuching after the international project, Bookaroo Trust – Festival of Children’s Literature won the Literary Festival Award during the London Book Fair’s (LBF) International Excellence Awards this year.

The Rainforest World Music Festival which will be held at the Sarawak Cultural Village on July 14 to 16 will feature some 29 bands over the three days stage shows.

Among the various activities lined up for this year’s 20th anniversary celebration include health and wellness programme in addition to the Festival’s usual mini sessions, arts and crafts for children as well as traditional food and crafts bazaars.
