MUSIC FROM THE RAINFORESTS OF BRAZIL
The Carimbó is one of the rhythms from the Brazilian Amazonian Indians, named after the traditional instrument made with trunks of trees. The group, ‘Raiz de Cafezal’ comes straight from the heartland of this music, deep in coffee plantation country in Magalhães Barata that has only 3000 inhabitants. This is music passed down from father to son and is ancient and compelling – the absolute real thing. These 6 musicians will have to travel a long way from their rainforest country to be present at ours and to participate at the coming Rainforest World Music Festival in July.
The founder of this group is the composer and musician Flávio Monteiro also known as Cizico. He plays percussion and also composes and makes the production of the traditional instruments called Curimbós, maracas and milheiros that pack the carimbó’s beat.
‘Raiz de Cafezal’ will take to the stage on Saturday 14 July. Take this opportunity to listen to this ancient but great music. Or why not learn to dance the Brazilian way at one of their workshops in the afternoon? Ladies bring your round skirts and men don’t forget your handkerchiefs!
