From vibrant, enigmatic and mesmerising Latvia, one of Europe’s untrodden jackpot, a country situated near the Baltic Sea and still undiscovered by the tourism masses, comes Ilgi.
The most famous world music band from Latvia, Iļģi has been performing for more than 30 years, with concert tours to Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Great Britain, Switzerland, Australia, USA, France, and China. They initially travelled throughout Latvia collecting and performing authentic Latvian folk music, but over the years their creative spirits made them search for new means of musical expression. The result was a fresh form of folk music that won new listeners and helped to make authentic folk music more popular among the younger generation.
A lot of Iļģi music is aimed for children and teenagers. Ilga Reizniece, the group members who has been there from the very beginning of the group has also been a music and folk-lore teacher for many years. She has delivered countless courses and lectures on Latvian folk-lore for children and grown-ups alike as well as taken part as a tutor in widely known retreats, like 3X3, in Latvia and abroad. The group loves to perform at schools.
While employing modern musical themes and instruments in their records Iļģi also has incorporated the influences of ethnic music from other countries, which has resulted in a distinctive style that has won them awards and acclaim worldwide.
From 1989 Ilgi have taken part in numerous music festivals in neighbouring Estonia and Lithuania as well as in Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Great Britain, Switzerland, Australia, USA, France, China, and gained both the sympathies of the listeners, and raving reviews from the press. Their best achievement was when Ne uz vienu dienu was voted the 2nd best European world music recordingby the experts of World Music Charts Europe (WMCE) and it has not been surpassed or equaled by any other group working in similar genre from Latvia.
